THE ESTIMATE vs. REALITY

              If you are reading this letter, you are either contemplating building a home, or you are actually ready to build your dream home.  In either case we would like to take just a little of your time to clear up a misconception. As you try to determine the cost of your project, you will probably visit several lumber and building material suppliers.  You will have your blueprints with you and will exchange information and ideas in order to obtain a building material estimate and price quote.  This may be your first time through the process, and believing each estimate and quote to be the same, you simply choose the lowest price, and this phase of your project is complete.

Here’s the misconception: Each estimator may have a different interpretation on how to do the material estimate.  The process may not be the same at each supplier; the quantities may be different.  Let us assume that Dealer A quotes you $10,000.00 and Dealer B quotes you $9,000.00.   You are happy and choose the lower price from Dealer B… but wait, that’s 10% less… why?  The answer is Dealer B (the lower price) simply missed something on the estimate, or substituted a different product, possibly an inferior one.  Don’t get caught, the “extra” material will be shipped anyway, and you will have to pay the extra… There were no savings.
